Eastern Block, Exit 38

Things are starting to resemble a normal Washington summer as Marlisa and I have come to expect it. COVID restrictions are lifting slowly, and that means we’ve been getting outside again.

This time we joined a few friends in North Bend, WA, for some after-work Thursday cragging. Marlisa has been having a tough time with her confidence on rock outdoors lately, so we found some very fun and moderate sport routes for her to use to build herself up.

We climbed “Closeness to Forever” (S, 5.8) at the Gun Show wall. It was a bit wet from some recent rainfall, so we moved up the hillside to Headlight Point to climb “Kiss of the Crowbar” (S, 5.7) and “Attack of the Butter Knives” (S, 5.8). The last two routes were super fun! They had an alpine feel to them, with more blocky rock instead of pockets. At the top there was an epic viewpoint.

I stuck a beer in my chalk bag just to get this selfie at the top.

Oh, and AJ was climbing the route next to me!

All in all, it felt great to get out to the crag on a work night and take no prisoners. The climbing was easy, and the company had been sorely missed.
